Who are we?

Late 2004 Arturo and Luisa Ianni, together with their daughter Emanuela set up shop at Tre Punte in Five Dock.

Luisa is the Sicilian of the family and has been making cakes for close to 35 years - having started her employment at Baba Cake Shop on Parramatta Road, Stanmore in the 1980's and eventually going into business with her brother and sister Tony and Giovanna Bonanno whom also worked at Baba. They owned The Boulevard Cake Shop in Fairfield for some time and then were, for 12 odd years at Dolcitalia in Merrylands.

Arturo (the Calabrese of the pair) had been a panel beater for many years, owning Profile Body Works in Greenacre and Bug Parts in Belmore, but on occassion helped out his pastry chef brother-in-law Tony at Merrylands whenever they were busy. When he and Luisa decided to open Tre Punte, they enlisted the help of Tony and Arthur took on the huge task of learning a new trade at 49 years of age, with Tony calling him the little apprentice. We must say - we're quite proud of him!

Emanuela came from a customer service background working at a popular gelato store as manager before lending herself to Tre Punte. Whilst there learning to cook some of the family's home cooked meals - where she now rivals mum in the kitchen! She has also taken a liking to inventing and creating new cakes for us to try. During this time Ema has had three gorgeous daughters Laura, Claudia and Elena, who make guest appearances at the cafe.

Our inspiration?

Whilst our name is purely Sicilian, both the Sicilian and Calabrese influences from both sides of the family are seen throughout our food. We are proud to say that our inspiration comes from our parents (and grandparents) whom we are proud to say taught us a great deal and where in their homes our love of food and sweets was encouraged and nurtured.

Why the name?

Picture
Tre Punte or three points was derived from the Sicilian flag with the Trinacria (which is also the ancient name of Sicily). The three legs represent the three  promontories of Sicily: Cape Peloro (Messina: North-east), Cape Passero (Siracusa: South) and Cape Lilibeo (or Cape Boeo, Marsala: West).

The Trinacria comes from one of the many mythological tales of Medusa the Gorgon. Medusa and her two sisters Stheno and Euryale, were the daughters of the pre-Titan sea Gods Phorcys and Ceto. Medusa being the youngest and only mortal of her sisters was also the most beautiful.

It was said that the sister's were at one stage quite wise and all served as priestesses to the virgin Goddess of wisdom, Athena. However, the sea God Poseidon desperately desired Medusa. There are conflicting stories as to whether Medusa was raped or it was consenual, but considering other stories of Poseidon raping others, they say that in a moment of raw passion he raped Medusa in Athena's temple.

Athena being appalled by the sacrilegious act, cursed Medusa and turned her into what she commonly became known as and banished her to the Isle of Sicily. Her beautiful hair became dozens of coiling snakes, her ears of wheat and her face was said to be so hideous that as a result, all who beheld the Gorgon were instantly turned to stone simply with a glance.
